Abstract : As electronic information continues to dominate people's lives and they are empowered to capture greater volumes of ever-richer media, a big challenge is emerging in the organization and retrieval of such multimedia data. The field of multimedia electronic chronicles deals with the unified contextual organization, presentation, and analysis of temporal streams of multimedia data captured by individuals, groups, or organizations. This paper, which serves as an introduction to a special session on Multimedia Processing for Electronic Chronicles, explains the notion of electronic chronicles and outlines the research challenges in this area.
