Professor Eltawil’s Research

Research Interests

The current research interests of Dr. Ahmed are in the general area of low-power digital circuit and signal processing architectures with an emphasis on mobile systems. He is affiliated with both the Center for Pervasive Communications and Computing (CPCC) and the Center for Embedded and Cyber-Physical Systems (CECS) at the University of California, Irvine.

Research Goals

In the field of wireless communications, two seemingly diverging trends can be discerned. The first trend is concerned with broadband wireless communication which is flourishing driven by the ever increasing need for higher bandwidth to satisfy multimedia networking. The second trend is related to low bit rate, ultra low power applications, which are finding numerous applications, such as remote wireless sensing, wearable electronics, etc. At WSCL, our program is archetected to identify and research technologies that provide the foundation on which ground breaking innovations capable of serving this wide spectrum of challenges can be conceived, designed and tested.

The WSCL group is led by Dr. Ahmed Eltawil. The research focus of the group lies in the area of efficient architectures for communications systems in general and wireless systems in particular. Specifically, we employ a multidisciplinary approach to the design and development of communication systems including but not limited to:

  1. Design of system and VLSI architectures for broadband wireless communication.
  2. Highly programmable and versatile ASIC/FPGA architectures for high speed data communications.
  3. Physical layer communication system design including system architecture and partitioning, cross layer optimizations, and physical mapping to hardware.
  4. Implementations and architectures for efficient digital signal processing.
  5. Digital circuit development including low power design and yield estimation.
